Quiet places for a longer stay in Samoëns: library, garden and riverside walks

On a stay of several weeks, the holiday rhythm fades and everyday life takes over. It helps to know a few calm places outside the rental: somewhere to read, a garden to sit in, a flat walk for the end of the day. Samoëns has several, all within walking distance of the village centre. Here is how to use them through the seasons.

The municipal library

The village library is a useful anchor on a longer stay. Beyond borrowing books, it offers a calm, heated room on a grey afternoon and a good selection on the mountains and local history. Ask at the desk about temporary membership for visitors; the conditions are set by the commune and can change.

Opening hours are shorter than in a city, and they vary between school holidays and term time, so note them on your first visit.

  • Municipal library: Médiathèque François Désarnod, in the village
  • Alpine garden: La Jaÿsinia, open in the snow-free season
  • Flat walk: Foron riverside and old town loop

The Jaÿsinia alpine garden

From spring to autumn, the alpine garden above the village is one of the most peaceful spots in Samoëns. Benches along the terraces look over the rooftops, and the garden changes from week to week, which is a pleasure when you stay long enough to notice it. In winter it closes under the snow.

Mornings are usually quieter than afternoons, especially in July and August.

A flat walk for every day

The loop along the Foron and through the old town is short and almost flat. It suits a daily walk after work or before dinner, in most weather. In winter, the paths near the village are often cleared, but ice can linger in shaded sections.

  • Keep a small backpack ready with a waterproof and a hat.
  • Ask the tourist office for the weekly programme of talks and guided visits.
  • Note the library and garden hours on the fridge on day one.

When you need information

The tourist office in the village centre is the best source for opening hours, events and the shuttle timetable. On a longer stay, a visit at the start of each month is worthwhile, as the programme changes quickly between seasons.

A month in Samoëns: monthly rentals and how to find them

A month in Samoëns is usually rented as a holiday let: French rules allow furnished tourist lets by the day, week or month, up to 90 consecutive days for the same guest. A bail mobilité, from one to ten months, is only open to people in training, studies or a temporary work assignment. Ask owners directly for a monthly rate, outside the school holidays.
